'For the person or persons that hold dominion, can no more combine with the keeping up of majesty the running with harlots drunk or naked about the streets, or the performances of a stage player, or the open violation or contempt of laws passed by themselves than they can combine existence with non-existence'.

- Benedict de Spinoza. Political Treatise. 1677.

on certainty 325

325. When we say that we know that such and such…, we mean that any reasonable person in our position would also know it, that it would be a piece of unreason to doubt it. Thus Moore too wants to say not merely that he knows that he etc. etc., but also that anyone endowed with reason in his position would know it just the same.

so ‘to know’ means –

reasonable people agree with each other –

‘agreement’ will do the job here –

being called ‘reasonable’ is the reward for agreeing –

‘unreasonable’ – the punishment for not –

pretty straightforward account of knowledge –

you agree with Wittgenstein and Moore –

or you don’t know

and you’re unreasonable to boot –

go directly to jail
