'For the person or persons that hold dominion, can no more combine with the keeping up of majesty the running with harlots drunk or naked about the streets, or the performances of a stage player, or the open violation or contempt of laws passed by themselves than they can combine existence with non-existence'.

- Benedict de Spinoza. Political Treatise. 1677.

on certainty 571

571. “My name is ... – you can rely on that. If it turns out to be wrong you need never believe me in the future.”

‘my name is …’ –

is all that is required –

saying

‘you can rely on that’ –

‘if it turns out to be wrong …’ –

etc. etc. –

is just to load it up with –

rhetorical rubbish –

the fact is –

regardless –

of any protestation –

to the contrary

the assertion –

like any assertion –

is open to question –

open to doubt –

if others assent to it –

all to the good –

if they don’t –

bad luck
