'For the person or persons that hold dominion, can no more combine with the keeping up of majesty the running with harlots drunk or naked about the streets, or the performances of a stage player, or the open violation or contempt of laws passed by themselves than they can combine existence with non-existence'.

Philosophical Grammar 123

123. Certainly, I read a story and don’t give a hang about any system of language, any more than if it was a story in pictures. Suppose we were to say at this point “something is a picture only in a picture-language”?

the picture is a proposal – a non-linguistic proposal –

yes – we can describe it linguistically – but the object itself – is not linguistic

it is a physical proposal – that is to be understood in terms of physical attributes –

and physical attributes – that are the result of artistic endeavour –

to understand the picture we have to have a grasp i.e. the use of color – perspective – artistic techniques – composition

ok – now I have here put forward a proposal – a description of a non-linguistic proposition –

my description – is open to question – to doubt –

as with any proposal – uncertain

the question of propositional form – is an open question –

my argument is that a proposition – can be anything – linguistic or not – that is put forward – that is proposed

yes we describe the world – and yes the world without proposal is unknown –

however the view I put is that anything that human beings create is a proposition –

I do not think that our reality is in all its forms is linguistic –

language is one propositional form – it is not I say – the only one –

and it follows from this that not all questioning – doubt – uncertainty – is to be seen as linguistic

the painter deals in a non-linguistic medium –

any questions – doubts he has with regard to his picture-proposition –

will be dealt with in the terms of his medium – i.e. – in terms of  materials and techniques

it will be in the actual practice of the art that the painter with his tools will deal with his proposition’s uncertainty

we face uncertainty in every context – and it is dealt with in different ways – linguistic and non-linguistic

to get to the final point – something is only a picture in a picture-language?

yes – if you like –

but the picture language is not linguistic
