'For the person or persons that hold dominion, can no more combine with the keeping up of majesty the running with harlots drunk or naked about the streets, or the performances of a stage player, or the open violation or contempt of laws passed by themselves than they can combine existence with non-existence'.

- Benedict de Spinoza. Political Treatise. 1677.

on certainty 660

660. I might ask: “How could I be making a mistake about my name being L.W?” And I can say: I can’t see how it would be possible.

the real issue here is – what is certainty?

it is just the refusal to consider possibility –

different understandings –

different ways of considering the world –

and all its details

yes – you can be certain –

but what this amounts to is –

stupidity
