'For the person or persons that hold dominion, can no more combine with the keeping up of majesty the running with harlots drunk or naked about the streets, or the performances of a stage player, or the open violation or contempt of laws passed by themselves than they can combine existence with non-existence'.

- Benedict de Spinoza. Political Treatise. 1677.

on certainty 521

14.4
521. Moore’s mistake lies in this – countering the assertion that one cannot know that, by saying “I do know it”.

knowledge is uncertain –

if you understand this –

then there are no mistakes –

there is no right or wrong –

all you have is proposals

proposals for dealing with the unknown

the question is one of circumstance –

whether a proposal works or not –

and here there is no certainty

we make decisions –

and our decisions – like our proposals –

are open to question –

open to doubt
