'For the person or persons that hold dominion, can no more combine with the keeping up of majesty the running with harlots drunk or naked about the streets, or the performances of a stage player, or the open violation or contempt of laws passed by themselves than they can combine existence with non-existence'.

- Benedict de Spinoza. Political Treatise. 1677.

on certainty 514

514. This statement appeared to me fundamental; if it is false, what are true or false any more?!

if by ‘fundamental’ is meant –

that which is beyond question –

beyond doubt –

there is no fundamental

any statement is open to question –

open to doubt –

the ground of all propositional action –

is uncertainty

‘true’ is what you assent to –

for whatever reason

‘false’ is what you dissent from –

for whatever reason
