'For the person or persons that hold dominion, can no more combine with the keeping up of majesty the running with harlots drunk or naked about the streets, or the performances of a stage player, or the open violation or contempt of laws passed by themselves than they can combine existence with non-existence'.

- Benedict de Spinoza. Political Treatise. 1677.

on certainty 222

222. I cannot possibly doubt that I was never in the stratosphere. Does that make me know it? Does it make it true?

to doubt is to question –

I can question any proposition –

that I entertain –

or that is put to me

if I don’t question –

does that make me know it?

does that make it true?

no – it means it is there

for my consideration
