on certainty 373


373. Why is it supposed to be possible to have grounds for believing something if it isn’t possible to be certain?



yes –

there are no grounds to knowledge or belief –

what we have is assertion

and the underwriting – of assertion

these underwritings –

or secondary propositions –

are nothing more than rhetorical devices or props –

the point of which is to pretend a security –

for the primary assertion

and on the basis of this pretence

to persuade of the significance –

or importance

of the primary assertion
